Niche Market Profile: Hard Right Edge

The combination of Daily Content and a vast array of informative Tutorials makes this a classic Authority Niche Website worthy of emulating.

This month’s Niche site that’s been around for years, and sells products and services produced by the site owner, Alan Farley.

Hard Right Edge is a site dedicated to Stock Market Swing Trading, the method of Buying and Selling stocks, but only hanging on to them for a few days before Exiting—hopefully with a profit :-)

Niche Market Websites Hard Right Edge-1

Hard Right Edge - Niche: Stock Trading

Alan is the author of a highly respected book published by McGraw Hill, and is a regular contributor for theStreet.com, a Trading site co-founded by Jim Cramer—that famous, crazy host of Mad Money, which is seen by millions daily on the Cable TV Financial channel,  CNBC.

But before the glitz, glamour, and glory, Alan began by selling his own Trading Course—and it was his work at this little Niche site that gained him world wide acclaim.

Daily Content for Daily Action

To bring people to the site each day, Alan created a set of formulas for Filtering the vast array of available stocks. From that process, he produces a very short list of stocks with a possible move coming. To make a profit, a stock must be moving up or down. If it stays the same price each day, a Trader can’t make any money.

Traders come here daily looking for good Setups so they can enter into a position for a few days, and then close that position to make a profit.

If you’re not in the Game, it’s a bit complicated. But for those who earn their living this way, the information Alan provides can be very valuable.

And after all, isn’t that the whole idea of a Niche Site? :-)

This site is stuffed full of articles to help the Traders hone their craft. Among the Tutorials, all of the Setups listed in his daily formulas are fully documented in his Trader’s Wheel section. There are over 70 articles here that are timeless Tutorials for Trading the Markets. These make the site a valuable resource of insightful, experienced information, difficult to find anywhere else.

Selling His Own Products

Alan travels the world while hosting his own seminars. Therefore, one way he works his Niche is as a Service Business.

But he also sells his own shippable products, through a bookstore, hosted by Traders Library. This is much like the Amazon AStore. But the classic Amazon AStore is primarily set up for the purpose of selling the products of others as an Affiliate—unless you have your own product set up to be sold through Amazon. But Traders Library is also a Publisher, as well as a Retail outlet, and is always on the lookout for quality authors.

.
A Niche Foundation to Greater Things

This is a great example of taking your talents and building layers of exposure, credibility, and income.

Alan is a frequent contributor on TV to Financial channel, CNBC. He has also been featured in Fidelity Outlook, Forbes, Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities, Barrons, Bloomberg, Smart Money, Futures Magazine, Tech Week, Active Trader, MSN Money, Technical Investor, Bridge Trader, Online Investor, America-Invest, the Los Angeles Times, and Trading Markets.

And it all began with his Niche website.

Niche Market Website Analysis

  • This is an Authority Niche site, selling proprietary products, and not a Gateway for Affiliate sales
  • Lot’s of quality original content here, from the site owner and Guest writers
  • The draw for daily visitors is a unique set of formulas that produce a list of Stocks that are poised for a potential profit-making move
  • The products are all proprietary to the owner, but are sold though various avenues
    • The Computer CD and Live Seminars are sold through the site itself
    • Books are sold through a site Storefront located at an Online Bookstore
    • Newsletter subscription sold through the major site he writes for (theStreet.com)
    • There are also Affiliate or Paid Advertisements on his site, but not many, and are products he personally uses

A few issues stand out here.

  • Alan has been able to leverage each activity into something bigger. From a lowly website to regular TV appearances, he has firmly established himself as an expert in his field.
  • No one source of income is prioritized, and multiple outlets are used for sales, depending on the type of product.

As mentioned above, I am one of the Guest Authors on this site. It’s important to meet people within your overall Niche Market, who offer products and services that are harmonious with your own.

A significant amount of my sales came as a result of such associations.

You may consider yourself to be just a lowly blogger at this point, but today we offered proof that with hard work and expertise, most anyone can build themselves into a recognized expert in their chosen Niche.

Now it’s YOUR turn :-)

  • Have you tried leveraging your Niche Website into a Service Business?
  • Have you developed your own Product yet?
  • What is your Time Line for the day when you consider yourself “Successful?”
  • What is YOUR Online Business Idea?

Let’s talk about it in the Comment Box below :-)

OK, I am not going to answer almost any of your questions :) besides the one about my own product – yes, being created… slowly…. very slowly…

This seems like an interesting niche site and something to look into. I guess I would first have to read all those 70 articles and get the idea how it all works.

But here is a questions for you… how many thousands of thousands of dollars you need to start trading those stocks :)

Creating a good product does take time, so don’t get discouraged.

Stock trading isn’t as big as it used to be. To be a Daytrader in stocks requires a minimum balance of $25,000. This rule was instituted back when everybody and their uncle wanted to be a day trader. Uncle Joe was a stock trading genius while the market was going straight up, but lost his shirt when the game actually began to require skill.

Swing trading doesn’t have that requirement, but if you need to quickly exit a bad trade you can quickly find that you are considered a day trader, and that totally messes you up.

And you thought online business was tough

    Hi Rick

Wow this guy is such an example of a successful marketer eh. I went to several seminars (put on by American traders) but too complicated for me lol Great that you could leverage through guesting too.

My timeline for my own product (ebook) has to be by the end of this year as I have said it is one of my goals for 2011 ;-) For setting up my new site(s) that is a hard one as still learning and researching suitable niche. Hopefully up in the next month and monetizing soon after.

Success will be when my sites bring in a reasonable income. I live simply, so doesn’t have to be a huge amount either :-)

The learning never ends. And creating a solid marketable product can be tough.

You must have more expertise than almost anyone on the planet, and you must be selling to a large Niche starving for what you have to offer.

I want to create the next new toy no one has ever heard of, but everyone instantly MUST have as soon as they see it :-)

    Rick,
I really like how you pick apart this niche site and all component parts that make it successful. It is a lot! built over time. It is a complete package.

I like his daily draw. And of course how he has built up his authority both off line and online.

To answer one of your questions, I am just getting ready to release my own product. Sales page is done and videos are in the works. Now I am thinking of ways to incorporate daily action along with these educational tools.

You’re right, it does take a long time to build this kind of site.

But from we have been hearing lately of the new Google algorithm, a solid Authority site will be more important. So if we are going to put that kind of work into something, it becomes more necessary to develop our own products.

I’m looking forward to your Launch! All the best on that :-)

    Hey Rick,

Really enjoyed this style of post; now that’s how you do it! I love how so much of it the work is tightly integrated so someone on the website would watch his appearances on TV and vice versa – it’s a digital empire, I love that.

I’ve been making a move with one of my websites recently. It’s an authority blog in a hobby niche but as it stands now it does affiliate products and such. I want to leverage into helping people with higher end items such as promoting themselves online and maybe, eventually, create a directory for people to share their own services for a small monthly fee.

I think that entrepreneurs like ourselves often try to think they need to be a broad range of markets but it can be such a powerful thing to stick to your niche and just look or those micro niches within it – then fulfill them :D

Awesome post Rick, I’d definitely read something like this again.

Yes, I agree, I think it’s better to be the big fish in a smaller pond, rather than get lost in the ocean.

Thank you for the kind words about the post. I definitely want to do more of these. I believe they are useful in helping us think outside the box somewhat.

Now if I can just on TV… :-)

  5. Hi Rick

Love the piece on Twitters :)

        Hi Rick,
I like the way you said you’re not all locked in the box of selling ebooks. Because i believe an important part of selling is showing the potential buyers that you know what you’re talking about. And what better way to do this than writing quality articles?

Hi Rick great post and what a fantastic example broken down. I’m subscribing right now. On to the answers.

I have created multiple products and services on my site and am in the process of adding continuity programs to all of them as well as a few other stand-alone continuity programs.

On one of my sites I created a few video products, and on the one linked in the CommentLuv I’ve essentially turned all of my services into products.

I already consider myself successful in one sense having built a $500k web development company. I’m currently finishing my transition to my love though – marketing, and helping people do it in a big way.

Thanks for a great post Rick and for asking.

This is definitely a great example of a successful niche business, as well as an example of the expert business, as well. He’s providing daily value and funneling his customers in by building trust and dependability. His advice is something they can take every day and apply it to see immediate results.

I’m in the process of developing my own products, and I plan to be a service business. It’s a bit slow going, but once I figure it out and get on my feet with the business, I’ll be able to start yet *another* business as I’ll have mastered the messy art of being a successful businessmom!

        Hi Rick!

Thank you for the encouragement. Actually, the other night I took the plunge and posted an ad on Craigslist (to start) for my own natural parenting consulting. I’m working on a separate Page on my blog talking about just that, almost like a white page only not as long. =) And I’m making fliers.

Trying to go the grassroots path to grow this. Then I’ll have more time to work on my online informational products, as I’ll be making more money as a consultant than a freelance writer.

My daughter will be happier, too.

take care! And thank you for the encouragement again.

Rick, aloha. Thx so much for this in depth review. I truly appreciate seeing Alan’s and his niche’s evolution. For me, even harder than creating the product, is having the patience to go through the necessary steps to get there. Having it laid out as you have done, makes it so much easier to see and to understand the process.

Because this posts contains such a wealth of information, resources and insights, I printed it for easy reference. Aloha. Janet

I does take a lot of time and effort, Janet.

There are two schools of thought about Niche sites. One is to have many simple sites that pull in just a little bit of profit. The other method is to build an Authority site like Alan’s, but which obviously requires a lot more commitment, and can only be built over an extended period of time.

But in Alan’s case, he IS the product, in many ways, so the Authority site is the only way he do it.

This site is definitely a great model :-)

I have never been too deep into it actually but what I have heard from the mouths of other people has definitely made some positive views from my side. Not just because its easy or so so, but it stands out from other similar sites. So , as a whole, I thinks this is worth a shot!
